Rumor » Guillermo del Toro to Direct The Hobbit

theonering.net is saying that there is a “99% probability that [Guillermo] del Toro would be helming the double picture.” Mr. del Toro achieved critical acclaim with the film Pan’s Labyrinth and is set to release Hellboy II: The Golden Army this summer.

Of course, TORN is quick to point out that “in Hollywood nothing is final until it is final.” And, also, the writer’s strike currently has the entire project on hold. But if these rumors are true, look for New Line Cinema to make the official announcement shortly after the conclusion to the strike — whenever that may be.

As for del Toro being at the helm of The Hobbit, I have to admit that I am open to the possibility on one condition: that Howard Shore scores the film. His score would provide a direct continuity between del Toro’s and Jackson’s version of Middle Earth.

New Star Trek Movie Teaser Trailer

startrek.jpg

Paramount has finally released a teaser trailer for the new Star Trek motion picture, due in theaters on Christmas 2008!

I have to admit, as I was watching the trailer, I was rather underwhelmed — until the very last moment. I mean, the scenes of welding and construction, with voiceovers of seminal moments in spaceflight, just didn’t say a whole heckuva lot about the upcoming movie. And worse yet, they didn’t feel like “Star Trek.” But the payoff is well worth the wait. And this is just a teaser trailer, afterall.

As for the payoff? We get Leonard Nimoy narrating the classic lines, “Space, the Final Frontier” — and we finally see what the construction is: the Starship Enterprise. The trailer ends with the tagline: “Under Construction.”

And upon further reflection, while the visuals tell us nothing about the movie itself, the trailer idea is brilliant. Teasers are meant to officially let the public know about an upcoming movie. The full trailer will give us the overview of the story. In the meantime, sit back, watch, listen and enjoy the classic fanfare and sight of the original Star Trek.
