“Russ races to stop Wichita’s Doomsday Device.”

Location: Wichita, KS
“Eve of Destruction” lays out the impending doom for Russell and whatever survivors have gathered to see Team Alpha’s plan in action. This episode is more about advancing plot than anything else, and yet it still manages to further the thematic elements of the past two episodes.

“The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” is a notably intriguing — if somewhat unfulfilling — episode. From start to finish, it is intent on pulling audiences along a remarkable, and seemingly inexplicable occurrence – one that was heavily foreshadowed in the previous installment. To its credit, the episode takes some time to focus on character, though, admittedly, it doesn’t cover a whole lot of new ground. Even so, the rehash serves to provide an additional layer on a story that is so full of revelations and paranormal events that it desperately needed *something* (however minor) to anchor it. For the most part, the episode is successful with this formula, however, the melodrama of its final paces is a bit awkward.

“Russ asks hard questions about the scientists plans.”

Location: Wichita, KS
“Faith In Science” continues the thematic conflict (named in the title) that began in the previous episode. Faith and science have long been at odds with one another. But the conflict becomes deeply ironic whenever science is treated as a matter of faith. Such circumstances rarely amount to anything good but that is precisely what the Professor is doing.

Deep Space Nine’s pilot episode, “Emissary,” has a lot of very big ideas about what it wants to be and where it wants the series to go. Unfortunately, the execution of the episode is very much flawed – to the point where it stands to lose some viewers. That’s not to say that it’s all doom and gloom. Indeed, there is enough here to provide fertile enough ground for some of the ideas to take root and grow. But in the most important of first impressions, the episode stumbles when it should be wowing audiences.

“Scientists believe they have found a way to restore the world.”

Location: Wichita, KS
“Team Alpha” goes a bit further to explain this new theory of The Fall. The problem for Russ, and most of the Team Alpha members (and most of us in the audience), the science is just way too advanced to be easily understood. In that sense, this theory is no different than, say, JD’s religious theory.

Overview
Without question, Superman III is step downward for the franchise. Indeed, you could point to this film (as well as Supes IV) as a big reason why it took so long for “comic book” films to be recognized as legitimate once again. In other words, whereas Superman: The Movie put comic book films on the map, Superman III started a trend that turned them into a mockery. That isn’t to say that this film is a total loss. There are, in fact, a number of memorable scenes and, as a whole, the movie is mildly entertaining. But its campy humor, characters and plot do very little to present a film that is worthy of praise, let alone serious discussion.

“Russ encounters a man who’s made strange use of the EMP.”

Location: Wichita, KS
“The Cobolt Clock” is another good episode for delving further into the mysteries of The Fall. Throw in Russell’s sentimental reflections on the “holiday season” and the episode is a pensive kind of story, taking its to time establish some new mysteries and leave the viewer wondering about its revelations.

“From Pole to Pole” immediately establishes BBC’s “Planet Earth” as a series unlike anything you have ever seen before. Not only is this a documentary of our planet on the grandest of scales, it is, visually, one of the most beautifully compelling hours of television ever produced.
And this is only the opening episode.

“Waking up in a forest, Parthia makes Russ a curious offer.”

Location: Salina, OK
“Gone, Baby, Gone” is an example not only having a good story to tell, but telling a good story. This episode is all about plot twists, revelations and mysteries. And it all succeeds quite masterfully.

“Dive To Shark Volcano” suffers from an overabundance of human personality. It is overproduced with an over-reliance of technology and an on-screen “personality.” And the result is decided underwhelming – which is a shame because the visuals that are captured are both incredibly clear, but also captivating. There’s just something fascinating about watching a large shark glide inches in front of a high-definition camera lens. You can thank presenter Mike deGruy’s insistence on being a camera hog for why this documentary is simply a waste of time – despite its high production budget.

“Under interrogation, Russ makes some discoveries of his own.”

Location: Salina, OK
“Parthia” begins unraveling some of the knots the series has tied since as far back as Philadelphia. In fact, there is even a surprise character appearance. The episode itself is mostly reflective, pulling together a number of plot threads to weave a slightly clearer picture of what has been happening since The Fall.

Let’s be honest: “Home” is a clip episode, aimed primarily at anyone who has not yet seen a whole lot of The Legend of the Seeker series. As a rule, these installments are, essentially, a waste of time – unless the episode is particularly adept at framing the clips. In this case, I have to say that the overarching story of the episode is interesting enough, and a plausible excuse to parade through a montage of clips detailing the series thus far. But it isn’t enough to make the episode watchable for those who have been following the series from start to finish. Put simply, this is an episode best suited to DVD or DVR – when you can skip the clips and instead spend your time on the very few scenes of actual new footage.

A review of the Season 4 episode “Deadlock” is now available:

Ridiculous.
“Deadlock” is an example of the absolute worst of Battlestar Galactica. It’s an episode based entirely on being petty. It’s a vice that infects every. Single. Character. Except for Sam Anders — who is only spared because he just so happens to be in a coma. The rest is an absolute waste of time, energy, story and character. Just when the series was close to getting some traction toward its final resolution, it stumbles mightily with an installment that simply oozes with soapy melodrama.

“Caught inside Parthia, Russ tries to lie his way to freedom”

Location: Salina, OK
“Who Are You” poses an interesting question fro Russell, considering his recent “Extreme Makeover: Ozarks Edition.” But aside from that, the episode is fairly straightforward exposition. In that sense, it’s a bit like the calm before the storm because by the end, Russell is once again in deep trouble.
