“Ice Worlds” is a chilling episode – and I don’t lightly make the pun. The truth is, the frigid wastelands of Earth’s poles provides for nature’s dramas to unfold with great intensity. As such, the struggle for survival, against the beautiful-yet-deadly environment, is amplified and the results are truly emotional – if you can allow yourself to become attached to the intrepid denizens of the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

“Deception” is a riveting episode that does something very important for the Legend of the Seeker: it attempts to humanize (at least some of) the D’Haran soldiers who fight for Darken Rahl. It’s an important evolution because it acknowledges the reality that, in any conflict, there are inevitably decent people on both sides – just as there are brutal warriors who seek only vengeance and violence. The result is a fairly balanced exploration of war from the perspective of those having to fight it – regardless of what side of the conflict they are on.

“Captive Pursuit” is a mildly entertaining episode thanks, primarily, to the friendship Chief O’Brien develops with the first alien visitor from the Gamma Quadrant. But otherwise, the episode stumbles with plausibility, pacing and an initial mystery that is insufficient to really generate a whole lot of momentum. The result is an episode that is just barely above average.

Kings is nothing if not fascinating. Its pilot episode, aptly titled “Goliath” is like some bizarre concoction of styles, story ideas and themes. On the one hand, it’s allegory – both for Biblical tales and the current state of the United States of America. On the other hand, it’s a glorified soap opera with all the requisite power players, schemes, innocence, lusts, and just about everything one might expect. The production values are fantastic, creating a show that looks and sounds incredible. And the story itself is meaningful – outside of its soapiest elements. But one has to wonder: Can a show like this truly survive? Can it find its footing telling meaningful tales without devolving into cheap melodrama? Time will tell but, for the opening episode at least, I thought the experiment worked.

“Deserts” features what is, perhaps, the most poetic sequence of the series thus far. Once again, the high production values are on full display but, more importantly, the episode details both the rugged beauty and the harsh struggle for life in regions which are barren and feature some of the most extreme weather on the planet.

“Captured by Arnold, Russ gets help from an unexpected source.”

“The Ever-Changing Truth” is an expansive episode thanks to its more introspective moments. There’s a bit of action here, and quite a bit of danger for everyone involved. But it’s the quiet moments after the fact that make this episode exceptional.

“He’s Our You” is a riveting and entertaining episode that just so happens to provide a major focus on character. As such, the direction and intentions of this installment are refreshingly welcome in a series that, for some time now, has been content to focus on the greater plot machinations of its story – rather than on the deep explorations of the characters. That isn’t to say that this episode is entirely successful with its purpose, or that it’s as good as earlier episodes of the series. But to give credit where it’s due, I enjoyed both the story and the character work of this installment.

“Babel” is a missed opportunity. The episode certainly features some high-minded suspense and a race against the clock to save the day (which play out reasonably well). Unfortunately, the main focus of the story is ultimately pointless. We know that the problem will be solved and life will go on. And the characters do little in the course of their attempts to inform the audience or provide any sort of commentary. Worse still, the greatest opportunity to turn the episode into an exploration of the human equation is wholly ignored – relegated to merely tantalizingly intriguing plot point, but nothing more.
