Character: Troy (Ian Imrie)

The Before Judgment series continues with an ominous installment that, while similar in some respects to The Blair Witch Projects, successfully manages to create a unique and compelling experience.

In this episode:

  • Begins with some nice outdoor shots
  • Troy is walking through the woods says, “this is where I first noticed ‘it.’”
  • Recounts having been there before, with his wife
  • Troy doesn’t know what happened to his wife
  • Music is eerie and foreboding
  • Troy says, “Don’t even think of going anywhere near the water. That’s where it all started.”
  • Troy asks his camera man, “Do you feel it?”
  • They comment on how it feels “like an earthquake” — even though, clearly, it isn’t

The Blair Witch comparisons come from the fact that you’ve got two guys out in the woods, tracking down something that is both elusive and dangerous. But not even knowing what it is that Troy is looking for helps heighten the tension. Once again, the musical accompaniment is crucial to helping the mood and tone. And the tidbits about what might have been a clue to the apocalypse are very interesting (e.g. the water, the feeling of an earthquake, etc.).

Leaving the revelation hidden creates a legitimate cliff hanger that will keep viewers tuned in for the next episode.
