Life 06: Insects – BBC Earth

The sixth installment of BBC’s Life series takes viewers into the mysterious and oftentimes creepy world of “Insects.” What the episode does well is to get close up to these oft feared and over-looked creatures to demonstrate just how diverse and specialized insects have become as they literally populate every corner of the world. Ultimately this is a thoroughly fascinating episode — but not if you’re the least bit squeamish about … bugs.

The true star of the episode, though, is the Monarch Butterfly which migrates thousands of miles from Canada to Mexico before the chill of winter sets in. There, great swarms of butterflies gather to hibernate. Monarchs are beautiful creatures, and seeing them gathered in such large numbers is quite a sight to behold. Additionally, the BBC film crew goes to great lengths to capture these insects as naturally and vividly as possible. The results are stunning — if you don’t mind the rest of the episode’s “creepy crawlies.”
