Good-bye Caprica, Hello Blood & Chrome

With dwindling ratings and a floundering story, Caprica has been canceled by SyFy. This development comes as no real surprise, though the decision to pull the final five episodes of Caprica from their Tuesday night slot and air them some time in 2011 was unexpected.

At the same time, SyFy has ordered a two-hour backdoor pilot for another Battlestar Galactica prequel series — this one focusing on the First Cylon War, set decades before the most recent BSG.

SyFy’s statement on Caprica’s cancellation:

“The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2. These final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”

“We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series,” said Mark Stern, programming head at Syfy. “Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

Official  Blood & Chrome description:

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.
