The Gemini Division is keeping things pretty close to the vest with “Kill-Switch” — the series’ penultimate episode to season one. True, there is an all-out battle between the SIMs and Gemini Division. But the final revelations of the series remain cloaked in mystery, misdirection and foreshadowing.

Simply breathtaking.
Gemini Division is building into a true tour de force of science fiction storytelling. The payoffs here, not simply in terms of narrative, but in terms of character and theme, are well worth the journey. The pleasant surprise here is Amasso. His character has long been peripheral. But in “Linnea,” Amasso takes center stage with a monologue that speaks far more to the human condition than it does to the plot of the Gemini Division series. Now, with only two episode remaining in this series, I am very, very grateful for the journey, for the experience. And for the powerful message contained within this episode.

“In The Region Of Ice” doesn’t let up on the rapidly deepening mysteries surrounding the circumstances of the relationship between Nick and Anna. As the episode unfolds (over a mere five minutes) we get background information on both Nick and Anna — and every bit of it is truly compelling.

Wow.
“The Lighthouse” is a gripping episode. The strengths here are the deep inner conflicts of Anna, and the performance of Rosario Dawson who manages to convey those conflicts with exceptional plausibility and empathy. Beyond that, there’s quite a bit of story that needs to be “unpacked” from the episode. There are a number of big payoffs in terms of the overall narrative. And with only four installments left, things are becoming very, very interesting.

“Finding Laszlo” in an episode in which the narrative takes center stage over character and theme. In this episode, Anna and Amasso force their way into a high security Gemini Division facility — and the results are not what Anna hoped for.

“Hell Without The Fire” is an episode that is as much about setup as it is about advancing the plot. In essence, it’s the calm before the series-ending storm. With just six episodes left (after this one) the final pieces are being moved into position. The thing about the endgame (especially in chess) is that one small error can end in a rapid, and spectacular defeat. Anna has to make the most importance choice of her entire journey.

“Ringu” is an episode that explores the opposing forces of fear and hope, of revenge and forgiveness. It includes a very harsh (and perhaps not unfair) critique of humanity’s tenure here on Earth. The story threads are slowly converging. And the underlying subtexts are being pulled in radically different directions.

“Thanatos” is a compelling episode from an emotional stanpoint. In many ways, it’s a payoff episode, considering the long buildup of this mysterious project the SIMs have undertaken. The truth is, perhaps, obvious in hindsight. But the consequences are positively gripping.

“Amasso” is an episode that will be known for the many answers it provides. Of course, it manages to generate almost as many questions in the process. Anna and Amasso finally meet, face-to-face. And Amasso is not happy. But Anna is saved by a not-so-small thing, something that Amasso immediately dismisses: love.

“Savior” could likely refer to Anna’s soul. This episode is heavy on buildup and backstory. And there’s finally some hints given about “Thanatos” the SIM’s secret operation. And of course, the episode leaves on one helluva cliffhanger.

“Anna’s Got A Gun” is a fascinating episode in terms of its thematic and moral explorations. True, there are a number of plot twists, but the strength of the episode rests on the implications of torture, murder, salvation and redemption — and whether or not the ends justify the means.

“9-1-1″ throws a fascinating twist into the narrative. Anna’s undercover role brings her to a very, very interesting gambit — one which might determine her future in Gemini Division.

“Underground” begins the process of Anna confronting, for the first time, the SIM underground network — and, presumably, their sensibilities. There’s a bit of setup work being done here, introducing a new location and several new characters. The episode isn’t so much a standout as it is a link in the chain, moving the narrative forward, and setting things up for the next big events.

“This Is What You Don’t Know” is another episode packed with both narrative and character information. The revelations are designed to reinforce the growing questions about what constitutes “humanity” — and to that end, this episode goes as far as any in advancing these explorations. The surface level story keeps us entertained, the undercurrents keep us thinking, pondering, and debating …
