Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow – Film Review
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is the kind of visual film George Lucas would love. Filled with stunning visuals and spectacular special effects, this is one of the most stylized movies in recent years. It’s a style that you will either love, or hate. And personally, I loved the style.
If you are looking for an original story, you won’t find it here. Modeled on films of the golden era of Hollywood, and set in a fictional 1930s New York, Sky Captain (Jude Law) embarks on an adventure worthy of Indiana Jones. Along for the ride is news reporter / photographer Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow). Their adventures take them from the streets of New York to Shangri La as they race to stop an evil mad scientist, who has become pissed at the world (hey, mad scientists are almost always fun), from blowing everyone up (doomsday devices are almost always cool, too). Along the way you are reminded of movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. And the pacing, visuals, and playful banter between Sky Captain and Polly Perkins keep you interested in the journey.
Ultimately Sky Captain is a fun, visually stunning, movie. The soundtrack is appropriately bombastic and if you’re looking for a entertaining way to kill a couple of hours on a rainy Saturday afternoon, it would be difficult to find a better alternative than Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
Just don’t expect a solid, captivating, surprising, or deeply profound experience.
Overall Grade: C
Combining the styles of film-noir, adventure, a serialized pulp, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a lightweight, entertaining film which, while lacking in original plot and characters, succeeds in creating a truly unique visual look.
