Firefly – Series Overview

The amount of reverence for Firefly has become so pitched that its biggest supporters hardly see any flaw in the series at all. Indeed, they loudly proclaim that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to cancel the series.

Unfortunately, they are wrong.

Don’t misunderstand me. I happen to think that Firefly was very good for a series in its first season, operating under a great deal of pressure. Given the circumstances, Firefly was a bona fide success. But it is far from deserving of the near deity status granted to it by its most ardent fans. In the following critique, I will analyze the show’s successes as well as its missteps and failures …

Overview:

For starters, I come to the Firefly series very late in the game. I was entirely unaware of its existence in 2002. And while 2005’s Serenity raised my awareness of the series, trailers and advertisements for the film utterly failed to to capture my interest. In the two years since, friends and acquaintances, knowing my personal tastes, have urged me to invest some time in both the series and the film.

As a result, this summer I have, finally, jumped into the deep end of Joss Whedon’s future world. And I have done so completely and entirely spoiler-free. I decided to start with the series and end with the movie — to see the entire franchise from start to finish, as Joss intended (though, admittedly, he intended the finish with a much larger body of work).

For this site, I will begin with an analysis of the series on its own merit, and then later critique the movie.
