Overview
“I Wanna Rock and Roll All Knight” is Knight Rider’s homage to the Bonnie and Clyde stories that seem to always saturate the entertainment world. There certainly is an understandably captivating element to the recklessly passionate lives that are romanticized in these stories and, for what it’s worth, this episode manages to capture some of that (though, admittedly, only on a surface level).
What really makes the episode even close to worthwhile, however, are the parallel stories of Michael and Sarah, and Zoe and Billy. In a way, the Bonnie and Clyde homage serves as a means to highlighting the relationships of the main cast. And in that sense, the episode works. Unfortunately, the overall writing is still highly suspect, and the fromage factor is still insufferably high. I’ll give credit where it’s due: the series certainly seems to be trying. The only question is whether or not it can get out of its own way.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Knight Rider executive producer/showrunner Gary Scott Thompson says, “It’s a reboot … We’re moving away from the terrorist-of-the-week formula and closer to the original, making it a show about a man and his car going out and helping more regular people, everymen.”

“Knight of the Living Dead” is a more successful episode than it has any right to be. The writing is still terrible. The campy, cheesy humor and “peril” are, well, campy and cheesy. There’s far too much technobabble and not enough actual investigative work. Plausibility is thrown completely out the window.
And yet …
I actually enjoyed the episode on a number of fairly profound levels. And it has nothing to do with the fact that this was a Halloween episode. I swear it. The fact of the matter is, this episode cut straight to the heart of the deeper implications of K.I.T.T. The Sentient Being, and almost completely ignored K.I.T.T. The Outrageously Cool Car. And it was all for the best.

Groan.
“Knight of the Hunter” is a trainwreck. It’s an abomination. I urge you. I implore you. Do. Not. Watch. No, really. Get that morbid curiosity out of your mind. I know what you’re thinking. It’s fun to watch a trainwreck. I’m here to tell you: it’s not fun. It’s agonizing. Or maybe you’re thinking that it cannot possibly be that bad. With such low expectations, you’re bound to find something you’ll enjoy. And that’s true. I recall laughing. But I think it’s because I remembered a joke about dead monkeys. Or remembered a line from the Daily Show.
But seriously. Don’t watch it. This is as bad as it gets. Why do I watch it?
So you don’t have to.

“A Hard Day’s Knight” is, simply, a bad episode. What little humor there was in previous episodes is gone straight to super-uber-cheesy-camp. The pacing is horribly awkward. The melodrama is just plain silly. And there’s almost nothing redeeming to the episode whatsoever. What little there is of value only comes by way of its horribly contrived plotline. And even then, it’s not worth the bother of a full episode.

“Knight of the Iguana” is an example of why Knight Rider, as a series, has amounted to nothing more than mindless drivel. Outside of an amusing open sequence, the rest of the episode is a mishmash of poorly contrived, and increasingly implausible events, culminating an ending which smacks of over-used television cliché. I’m not quite sure how or why this series ever made it this far. But there’s little here to provide any measure of real entertainment – unless you’re simply ogling the beach babes. And let’s face it, if looking at sex objects is your thing, you can do that much easier (and better) online. Put simply, this series is, at best, a novelty.

“Knight Fever” is yet another example of purely puerile entertainment. Fortunately for this particular episode, the narrative is a little more tightly focused. True, most viewers watching these kinds of shows aren’t particularly concerned with such niceties as plot, character, or theme. But the fact of the matter is that these elements are the difference between a flash-in-the-pan, flameout of a series – and something with a bit of longevity. Put simply, the obviously juvenile story, humor, and exploitation can almost be forgiven if the rest of the material is properly crafted. That hasn’t happened yet with Knight Rider, but this episode is certainly an improvement over the series premiere.

“A Knight In Shining Armor” is the premier episode of the newly minted Knight Rider series – a continuation of the campy 1980s hit television show which featured a super-cool talking car and the sorta-suave David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight. This new version had its backdoor pilot last winter in an offering which was far more style than substance – and the style was quite questionable. The season premiere features a few upgrades on the style, including a “transforming” KITT. But the bottom line is this: we’re still dealing with pointless, mindless, exploitative entertainment. If you’re a fan of this kind of show, chances are you’ll love it. But if you’re looking for a modicum of brains, intelligence, purpose, or craft, you’ll do well to look elsewhere.

Just a few updates regarding the upcoming Knight Rider series:
- The series will debut on Wednesday, September 24, 8/7c on NBC
- KITT has been redesigned (again) for an Attack Mode to make it look more ridiculous, ludicrous, preposterous, and just plain stupid than ever before (see below).
- There is a one-minute preview of the series available on nbc.com and it looks like they took everything that didn’t work from the pilot and expanded it about tenfold.
