Modern Mythic Archetypes » Defining DauntlessMedia.net
Though it has been an underlying element in every review and article thus far written for DauntlessMedia.net, it is time to clearly define the main purpose, and mission, of this network of websites. This is an important distinction to make because while writing reviews and sharing news for television shows, books, and movies has, and always will be, a major part of DauntlessMedia.net, these offerings are merely the foundation for a much larger purpose:
DauntlessMedia.net is dedicated to the thorough examination of the common archetypes present in modern media. Much like Joseph Campbell sought to uncover and analyze the interconnectedness, the archetypes, of ancient cultures and mythologies, DauntlessMedia.net will seek to uncover and analyze the archetypes present in modern media.
To that end, DauntlessMedia.net has established a number of websites dedicated to specific mythic media, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Battlestar Galactica, Indiana Jones, Transformers, Star Wars, Lost , V: The Miniseries, Batman, Firefly, etc. More sites and articles for media such as (but not limited to) Harry Potter, Fraggle Rock, Braveheart, The Shawshank Redemption, The X-Files, and Tolkien’s Middle Earth will be added as part of an ongoing process to develop a comprehensive basis for our explorations. And through a series of critical analyses and reviews, these sites and articles will establish a foundation on which we can build our future explorations of modern mythic archetypes.
What does it mean to explore the interconnectedness of modern mythic media? We will begin by examining the archetypes, the common themes and ideas that are present in a wide variety of modern media. By analyzing how different media portray various archetypes, we can further understand how today’s society is adding its own commentary to a series of profound issues that have faced humanity. By doing so, we hope to add our own voice to the ongoing explorations of these ideas.
If you’re looking for a sign of things to come, I recommend reading the already published essay, “The Faces of Evil.” This article uses Star Wars and Beast Wars to explore the differences between an evil person and evil deeds. In the near future, we will begin adding pages and articles for a variety of themes and ideas from “Resistance Fighters” to “The Use of Torture” to “When The Creation Destroys The Creator” — to name just a few.
I would be honored if you would join me on this journey of exploration through the archetypes contained within our modern mythic media.
