Following a trend that was proven to be quite lucrative with the release of The Dark Knight, on May 8, 2009 the upcoming J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek will be released simultaneously in traditional theaters and in IMAX format. Given the teaser trailers we’ve seen thus far, one thing about the film is certain: it’s sure to be a visual feast — so the IMAX format makes perfect sense. In a statement from the official website:
STAR TREK originally scheduled for release on 12/25/2008 will now be released on May 8, 2009.
What I’m hearing is that this change has been made due to the writer’s strike. With an uneven release schedule, Paramount has decided to move Star Trek to a more high profile release date.
The bad news is that we’ll have to wait a bit longer than we had expected. But the good news is twofold. First, it gives creator J.J. Abrams more than enough time to put the finishing touches on the final product. Second, we can infer that Paramount must feel confident enough about the film to put it in a more competitive release.

Paramount has finally released a teaser trailer for the new Star Trek motion picture, due in theaters on Christmas 2008!
I have to admit, as I was watching the trailer, I was rather underwhelmed — until the very last moment. I mean, the scenes of welding and construction, with voiceovers of seminal moments in spaceflight, just didn’t say a whole heckuva lot about the upcoming movie. And worse yet, they didn’t feel like “Star Trek.” But the payoff is well worth the wait. And this is just a teaser trailer, afterall.
As for the payoff? We get Leonard Nimoy narrating the classic lines, “Space, the Final Frontier” — and we finally see what the construction is: the Starship Enterprise. The trailer ends with the tagline: “Under Construction.”

And upon further reflection, while the visuals tell us nothing about the movie itself, the trailer idea is brilliant. Teasers are meant to officially let the public know about an upcoming movie. The full trailer will give us the overview of the story. In the meantime, sit back, watch, listen and enjoy the classic fanfare and sight of the original Star Trek.
