The Last Outpost is a significant improvement for the series in concept, writing, and overall atmosphere.

The whole concept of encountering a minor outpost of the ancient Tkon Empire is intruiging. And the fact that this minor outpost is so powerful hints at just how great the Tkon Empire once was. This adds a rich depth to the Star Trek universe and is a sign of the improving writing. The comic relief comes from Data’s inability to remove his fingers from a “Chinese finger puzzle.” It’s a nice counterpoint to the impending sense of doom that builds throughout the episode.

Both Riker and LaForge are starting to come into their own as a characters. This episode highlights Riker’s wisdom and poise as well as LaForge’s enthusiasm and technical know-how. In fact, LaForge becomes the de facto Chief Engineer during the episode.

There are some criticisms. Once again, the peril facing the crew is averted at the last possible moment. And the acting is still improving. The Ferengi are simply annoying. This is our introduction to this new species, and thankfully the writers “evolve” them from hyperactive greedy lunatics into just greedy lunatics as the series progresses.

Honestly, I’m between a C+ and a B- with this one. It’s a big improvement over Code of Honor, but it still has it’s problems. On the whole, though, I think the concept for the episode is enough to overcome its shortfalls.
