This is a classic TNG episode. Combining the best elements of science, fiction, drama and profound thought, Where No One Has Gone Before takes us to the next level of Star Trek.

The key elements in this episode are the concepts of time, space and thought. This theoretical construct is what makes it possible for the crew to travel to the edge of the universe and back again. The ‘Traveler’ is wonderfully conceived character. His motivations: pure scientific curiosity are both believable and compelling. And the friendship he forms with Wesley signals an evolution in the character of the youngest member of the crew. Indeed, The Traveler tells Picard that Wesley is to warp theory as Mozart was to music.

In order to allow Wesley’s talents to flourish, the episode ends with Picard making Wesley an ‘Acting Ensign’.

As I said above, this is a classic episode. The writing continues to improve and as the actors become more familiar with their characters, so does the acting.
