When the Bough Breaks contains all the classic elements of a TNG episode: adventure, mystery, humor, tension, conflict and profound themes. And it does so without making any major mistakes. In that sense, it represents the best that the series has to offer. The problem with this particular episode, however, is that none of the elements are particularly spectacular or memorable.

The Atlantis-like Aldea — a supremely technologically sophisticated planet that has remained hidden for millennia — is a fascinating concept in the Star Trek universe. Unfortunately, we don’t see much of this “mysterious” civilization and the Aldeans themselves are unremarkable, aside from their creepy obsession with children.

The obsession itself is plausible. The Aldeans are unable to have children because their high technology, which has protected them from outsiders, has also damaged their planet and threatened their civilization — a profound theme.

We also see some character growth from the crew. This episode episode centers on Wesley’s ability to form a passive resistance. And indeed, this is our first exposure to Wesley’s maturity. Additionally, Picard is literally forced to relate to children and it is amusing to hear Radu, leader of the Aldeans say to Picard “I’m terrible with children” as he implores Picard to help with Wesley’s “resistance.” Amusingly, Picard replies “I’ll see what I can do.”

Considering the fact that children are a central focus, this episode also manages to avoid a clear potential for disaster. Children in movies and television can cause significant problems (The Phantom Menace) or become a great asset (Harry Potter). When the Bough Breaks avoids the problems, but neither does it achieve any real success.

And that, of course, summarizes this episode. When the Bough Breaks has a solid premise, a satisfactorily-executed story, some sincere humor and plausible characters … but nowhere does is shine brightly.
