2.14 – The Icarus Factor

The Icarus Factor is an uneven episode that features humor, camaraderie, and an angst-ridden conflict between Riker and his father. The Riker story line is just too difficult to watch to be of any value. Fortunately, the Worf story gives us enough of a reason to watch this episode.
Worf’s story begins as he yells at Wesley. We can all understand and appreciate the occasional urge to yell at the boy wonder, however, Worf does so with a bit more aggression than is called for. And yet, instead of being offended, Wesley goes on a bit of a quest to determine why his comrade has suddenly become the Klingon equivalent of emo.
The interchanges between Wesley, LaForge and Data, as they attempt to figure out why Worf is having issues are the highlight of the episode. They feature a close friendship amongst the crew and genuine care for their shipmates. In the end, we’re given yet another glimpse into the Klingon culture and it is a worthy payoff.
Riker’s story, though the main focus of the episode, just isn’t as compelling. Father/son angst stories may play on common dynamics, but portraying them on-screen is rather difficult to do. I give the series credit for broaching the subject, but good solid family-related episodes will have to wait a few more seasons before they are given worthy stories and performances.
The most awkward aspect of the Riker story, outside of the icy relationship between father and son, is the revelation that Pulaski once had a rather intimate relationship with Riker’s father. Throw in a heart-to-heart between Pulaski and Troi, decrying the juvenile traits of the Riker family, and you’ve got the stuff of daytime soap operas, rather than TNG.
The performances surrounding Worf’s story, including the very minor subplot involving LaForge being defensive over the Engine Room, are all well-done. Unfortunately, the performances surrounding Riker’s story just don’t hold up nearly as well. And in a character driven piece, you need solid performances, regardless of the writing.

The Icarus Factor has some very enjoyable moments that are nearly lost in the midst of an awkward, tedious main story.
