Booby Trap is a seemingly simple story that just happens to be one of the best crafted episodes of the series. The writing, story, acting and even the music are all extremely well-done. The episode suffers only from a lack of profound morality and a slight overdose of tech-talk. But aside from those minor criticisms, this is an absolutely enjoyable episode.

One of the best aspects of the episode is the story itself. Exploring an ancient battlefield, finding an historic relic, becoming ensnared by the same simple-yet-effective trap that trapped the relic in the first place are all incredibly fascinating concepts. The premise sets the stage for both Picard and LaForge to shine.

The story weaves together two minor subplots: LaForge’s relationship woes and Picard’s deep interest in the “ship in the bottle.” Both are introduced early in the episode and are subsequently woven into the overall crisis right up to the very end. This attention to thematic detail is evidence of superb writing and the episode greatly benefits as a result.

One last highlight is the music that accompanies this episode. TNG scores are usually well-done, but they rarely are good enough to elevate the episode. This score is an exception. From the ancient battlefield to the triumphant climax, the composition fits the story and mood perfectly.

The only criticism of the episode can also be seen as another example of its success. LaForge’s research is heavily weighted with tech-talk. So much so that it is easy to almost ignore it. That being said, the talk itself is done in such a way that, in spite of its technical terms, it is easy to follow along and understand the nature of the problems facing the Enterprise.

Booby Trap hardly approaches any truly resonant themes. And it does have some lengthy, tech-heavy scenes. But it is otherwise so well done, that it easily ranks as a superb episode.
