2.04 – Senate Spy – Clone Wars Review

“A true heart should never be doubted.”

“Senate Spy” is a solid installment of the Clone Wars series. Perhaps what is most interesting about this episode is how deliberately it references the Prequel Trilogy – from characters to settings to specific camera “shots.” It’s clear that series is meant to evoke familiar moments from the films in general, but this episode draws very strong parallels to Revenge of the Sith. The story itself seems tailor-made to such comparisons and the result is a very good installment.

This is the story of how the Jedi try to spy on the illicit dealings of Senator Clovis, using Padme as a spy. The added twist of a prior “closeness” between Padme and Clovis allows for a darker exploration of Anakin as his feelings of jealousy begin to color his thoughts, feelings and actions. But the episode makes a very smart decision in using the potential love-triangle as a background element and not making it the primary focus of the story.

In fact, the episode begins with a quiet, romantic evening between Padme and Anakin as they reunite after a long time apart. Their interactions are warm and comfortable and the episode lets us see them, albeit briefly, as two people in love who just want to spend time together. It’s a nice touch which not only emphasizes the humanity of these characters, but also establishes what’s at stake during Padme’s mission. And, of course, their quiet evening is cut short – the demands of war separating the pair yet again.

As an aside, it’s amazing how well the Clone Wars series conveys the strained relationship between Padme and Anakin as compared to the films. The nuance of their interactions seemed lost in the spectacle of the big-budget format of the films. It’s a shame because the extra details – his insecurity and jealousy – help provide a solid motivational foundation for Anakin’s descent into darkness.

The spy mission itself is likewise well-crafted. The character of Clovis is quite believable as a profiteer, who just so happens to have a soft spot for Padme. That much of the action takes place on Cato Neimoidia – the homeworld of the Trade Federation – only adds another layer of intrigue, particularly when Lott Dodd decides to poison Padme. This, of course, sets up the episode’s best moments with Anakin trying to save Padme’s life and Clovis, for his part, willing to sacrifice his profits for Padme’s well-being.

Overall Grade: B+

“Senate Spy” is another very strong episode of the Clone Wars series. Excellent characterizations make all the difference. But even little touches, like the shots of Padme’s balcony or the entrance to the Jedi temple make this episode feel as though it fits perfectly into the Star Wars saga.
