DauntlessMedia.net’s Television Index

As part of DauntlessMedia.net’s mission to explore the archetypes within modern mythos, I am reviewing and analyzing a select group of television shows.  These shows are chosen based on my particular interests, as well as the potential for providing an insight into how our modern mythos informs the values, fears and hopes of our society.  The shows listed below are in varying degrees of completion.  This is a project that will continue to be the main focus of the site through mid-2009 when, necessarily, my efforts will shift toward giving essays and articles that will explore the interconnectedness of these stories a higher priority.

  1. Please submit comments for
    DS9 and Voyager
    I enjoy reading.

  2. DK,

    Thank you for your feedback!

As chance would have it, I will be starting DS9 reviews in the very near future. They will be released when all of my reviews for Star Trek’s original series are complete, including movies 1-6.

You can expect to start seeing DS9 reviews around Thanksgiving of this year.

  3. Hey Samuel,

I just posted a new TV show schedule for 2009 -2010 season on the scifi website. There’s a bunch of new shows you might be interested in following and writing about here. Check it out, and let me know if it helps!

    Michael :)

  4. Michael,

Very comprehensive list! I’ll definitely be making use of it as the season gears up.

Are you planning on doing any reviews of those shows?

    -Sam

  5. I sure hope to cover most of them. As you can see, I have only just recently tried to get back to writing. So, I caught several of the recent summer debuts, but others I was just too late for (same with film previews, but you are covering the new film releases nicely!), like Merlin … tomorrow night is the season finale.

I think I have a jump on the fall-winter season now, so i should be able to cover the new shows, without falling behind like i did last year. Some real interesting shows coming!

  6. I started watching Merlin … I just couldn’t get into it. It’s similar to Legend of the Seeker, but with lesser production values, characters, scripts, etc. I might return to it at some later point … but for now I’m content to wait for the upcoming seasons of V, Fringe, Clone Wars, Seeker, and, later, Lost and Caprica (not to mention the new Web Series on the horizon).

Some of the newer shows you have listed on your site intrigue me … particularly the BBC variety. But for me to start something new (beyond the new V), it’s going to have to pull me in pretty quick.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with your coverage. Are you planning episode-by-episode reviews? Or something different?

  7. Just my Previews coverage style, and “try” reviewing returning shows. No way I could cover episodes like you, unless it was in a forum discussion (which I miss since GD).

I’ll try to get a preview article out within the same week for each of the new show’s premiere. Durham County on Ion channel is the first week of Sept., then Vampire Diaries, and so on. This week, I really need to cover Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2, the first one was outstanding, and I cringe whenever anyone tries to do a remake.

Yeah, V is a biggie for me, too (but, I am cringing). But, so far the preview from Starz’s Sparticus has me drooling for more.

I totally agree about Merlin … at least, twice, they had the most awful effects when fighting with a monster. Just horrid.

  8. Oh, before I forget … can you give me shout out, when a genre web series is coming out? I have been out of the loop too long. :(

  9. I see you have reviews for most of the star trek series… I enjoyed reading them. I’d really like to see you review the star trek voyager series.

  10. I realize you’ve gotten past this part of your project, but I believe it would be worthwhile to include Buffy the Vampire Slayer and/or Angel as the former left an indelible mark on modern television. Also worth noting is Dollhouse, as it serves as an intriguing commentary on humanity’s desire for pleasure. I’m also somewhat surprised that Heroes isn’t listed here.

All of that said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your Deep Space Nine and Galactica reviews, and I look forward to seeing what else you have in store for your readers.

  11. Apologies: I see that both Dollhouse and Heroes have reviews in your Pilots and Premieres section.

  12. Any chance that you would do reviews of Babylon 5? It’s one of the best Sci-Fi narratives out there.

  13. Chanced onto your site looking for reviews of particular Star Trek (franchise, not TOS) episodes, and pleasantly surprised! “Review” has, sadly, been all too conflated with “recap” as of late. I’m delighted to see a prolific reviewer who provides thoughtful analysis.

I’d love to see you tackle additional shows, though I see the note about your priorities changing post-2009…

  14. Thanks for the kind words! I’ve made a conscious effort to provide commentary, rather than summary (there are some great sites for summary, like memory-alpha) so I definitely appreciate when someone notices!

As for tackling additional shows … I still would like to finish off some of the ones I’ve started (Clone Wars, Fringe, The Wire) and someday delve into some others (Voyager, Enterprise and the Star Trek Animated Series will finish off the franchise and Babylon 5 seems like it’d be worth the investment). Unfortunately, at this time, there’s just no room in my schedule for in depth episode-by-episode reviews (nearly all of my free time is dedicated to revising the manuscript to my first novel, developing ideas for several other novels and querying literary agents).

I’d like to keep doing reviews, though. What may be more feasible for me would be to write up some reviews of the Young Adult books I’ve recently read (The House of the Scorpion, Shadow and Bone, Under The Never Sky, etc.).
