2012 Writing Update!

Head on over to my “official” site for an progress update on my novel. Short summary: I’m making 219 pages of revisions in preparation for the final stretch of writing.

The Andira Chronicles – Trailer

In order to provide an overview of The Andira Chronicles, I decided to do a simple “trailer” that provides a poetic backdrop for current and future tales …

As part of my ongoing efforts to focus on more creative endeavors, I’ve launched samuelwalters.info — a site specifically to promote my writing and photography. Dauntlessmedia.net will still be a place for updates and reviews, however I wanted a more streamlined, promotional online presence. Updates will still coincide with my current Twitter feed and a newly launched a new Facebook page, specifically for my professional work.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 – Film Review

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 is an epic, emotional, though somewhat flawed cinematic finale to J.K. Rowling’s literary saga. It literally picks up where Part 1 left off and continues the narrative plunge into darkness and chaos before the inevitable resolution. If there’s a over-arching criticism of Part 2 is that it feels less personal, deliberate and intimate than its immediate predecessor. With so much to accomplish, it is almost an unfair to make such an assertion. But the uneven pacing and sometimes awkward editing are a direct result of the story’s chaos occasionally infecting the film itself.

Still, for what it’s worth, Part 2 provides a thrilling, ultimately satisfying conclusion.

Site Modifications and Updates: 07.04.2011

Greetings, programs!

As has long been hinted, my writing has finally drifted away from reviews and towards more creative endeavors. And a recent first-meeting with a literary agent has only served to sharpen my efforts. To that end, I’ve finally finished the short story “Creepers and Dust” (which, in twelve parts, is now nearly a novella in length) and have revised the Andira Chronicles site to be more user-friendly for potential agents, editors and publishers. Furthermore, I’ve reworked a more specific, tightly focused outline for the first Andira novel, giving it the working title: The Darkness. If recent progress is any indication, a rough draft ought to be completed by the send of Summer 2011 (I’m really excited by character and thematic conflicts that have been fleshed out).

As for the reviews, though they have been neglected, they have not been forgotten. Indeed, I’d love to share my thoughts on the recent Pirates and Transformer films. TNT’s Falling Skies certainly deserves a review. And, of course, I’d like to get caught up on Fringe and The Clone Wars. Heck, I even took the time to watch the pilot episode of Star Trek Voyager. But I have to remind myself not to write reviews (and instead work on the Andira project).

When will these reviews be written? Who can say? (No, not me … I’m busy! No really, I am!) But if the first draft of The Darkness comes together as quickly as I hope, then I ought to have some time before the new Fall TV season begins. In the meantime, I’ll be spending my down time continuing my foray into photography.

Thanks for visiting, and I’ll see you on the other side of The Darkness.

3.12 – Nightsisters – Clone Wars Review

“The swiftest path to destruction is through vengeance.”

“Nightsisters” covers so much ground that it’s not too difficult to forget that it is, after all, merely a half-hour installment of The Clone Wars series. Indeed, it feels more like a cinematic overture of it’s bigger cousin, the Star Wars prequels. But a comparison might almost be to the detriment of this particular installment. “Nightsisters” features an exceptionally well-paced, frenetic plot which contains appropriate measures of intense action, characterization and even humor. The dark, almost other-worldly atmosphere of the episode, as well as the score, are likewise praiseworthy. As much as the opening half of Season 3 focused on political machinations, the second half begins with one helluva explosion.

Adirondack Mountains at 5,000 ft.

I recently took a morning flight from Albany to Ogdensburg, New York and snapped these photos of the snow-swept and fog-bound Adirondacks from about 5,000 feet up. These are the highlights. Click HERE for the rest of the photos.

Disneynature: Oceans – Documentary Review

Oceans is the second installment (here in the United States) from the Disneynature series to take a close, cinematic look at life on earth. Whereas the first installment, Earth, was essentially a “remix” of footage from BBC’s Planet Earth television series, Oceans heads across the English Channel for its inspiration, utilizing the work French cinematographers Jacques Perrin and Jacque Cluzaud. This provides a fresh, oftentimes evocative exploration of the sea and the life brimming within it. But the movie is also slow and leaden in its pace, surprisingly hindered by the narration by Pierce Brosnan. The result is a documentary that is well-worth the time … provided you’ve got a cup of tea, or coffee, to keep you awake through its slower paces.
