V: The Final Battle

» V: The Final Battle - Main Title: Main Title
With V: The Miniseries achieving bona fide success, and with it ending on a relatively unresolved note, it was all but assured that there would be a sequel — one that would, with a boldly proclaimed title of The Final Battle, end on a higher note. The key would be whether or not the sequel could avoid the usual trappings of a sequel. Would it maintain the same strict adherence to character that drove the vast majority of The Miniseries? Or would it fall into the formulaic presentation of The Miniseries‘ final act?
What made The Miniseries such a success wasn’t just its idea of an alien invasion — those stories have been told hundreds times before (and since). What separated it from the usual sci-fi fare were two concepts: it’s declared dedication to Resistance Fighters (past, present, and future), as well as its humanity — its devotion to who we are as a society and a civilization, and how we would react to such an invasion.
The Final Battle, however, isn’t so much a study in humanity as it is a study in intrigue and plot twists. It isn’t so much a dedication to Resistance Fighters as it is an example of action and visual fireworks. True, the action is frenetic. The plot twists and weaves so quickly that The Final Battle unfolds at a robust pace. But the end result is a show that greatly benefits from its predecessor, and offers very few new revelations, or opportunities for the exploration of the human equation.
